About Lawmaxxer

Learn game theory by losing in court.

Lawmaxxer is a free browser game about one of the most famous ideas in game theory: the Prisoner's Dilemma. You play a lawyer facing an unknown opposing counsel. Every round you both choose to Settle or Sue, and the case goes to whoever plays the long game better.

Why make a game about this?

The Prisoner's Dilemma explains a lot about the world: why rivals cooperate, why feuds escalate, why trust is hard to build and easy to lose. Most people meet it as a table in a textbook and forget it a week later. We think you learn it properly by playing it, getting burned, and working out why.

So every case in Lawmaxxer ends with a debrief. Win or lose, the court reveals who you were facing, how they decided their moves, and what would have beaten them. A loss is a lesson with a gavel attached.

Fair play

Every move is scored on our server, not in your browser, and your opponent's identity is kept secret until the verdict. Nobody can peek at the answer or fake their way up the leaderboard, so a high score means you really did out-think the court.

How it's paid for

Lawmaxxer is free to play. After a lost case you may be asked to watch a short ad before the next one. That keeps the servers running without charging anyone.
